The goal continued another remarkable night for the 27-year-old, who was making his 100th appearance for France and had already entered the match carrying enormous momentum following his brace against Senegal in the opening group game.France continued to dominate possession and territory throughout the remainder of the first half. Iraq struggled to establish sustained attacks and failed to register a shot on target as Deschamps’ side controlled the tempo through patient possession and quick circulation of the ball.
Storm halts the match for more than two hours

Under tournament regulations, play cannot resume until there has been a prolonged period without lightning detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium. Continued storm activity repeatedly reset the countdown clock, resulting in a remarkable 130-minute delay.The second half eventually began at 8:00 p.m. local time, more than two hours after the players had originally left the pitch.
France resume where they left off
Any concern that the lengthy interruption might disrupt France’s rhythm disappeared almost immediately after the restart.Only nine minutes into the second half, Dembele drove forward and capitalised on uncertainty inside the Iraqi defence before delivering a low ball across the six-yard box. Mbappe reacted first, arriving centrally to stab the finish into the bottom corner for his second goal of the night and France’s second of the evening.

The strike further enhanced an already historic occasion for the France captain. His first-half opener had taken him to 15 World Cup goals, while his second moved him onto 16 for his World Cup career.France’s third goal arrived in the 66th minute through Dembele, who capped an excellent individual display with his first goal at a major international tournament. Once again Olise was involved, releasing the winger into space down the right. Dembele surged past two defenders with a sharp change of direction before driving a powerful finish into the far bottom corner beyond Basil.

France dominate the numbers and the group
The final statistics reflected France’s control throughout the evening. Les Bleus finished with 56 per cent possession, registered 19 shots compared to Iraq’s four and limited Graham Arnold’s side to zero efforts on target. France completed passes at an impressive 91 per cent accuracy while Iraq finished with an 86 per cent completion rate despite spending long periods without the ball.France also won four corners to Iraq’s two and consistently forced the Lions of Mesopotamia into a reactive defensive shape.The victory sends France to the top of Group I with six points from two matches and confirms their place in the knockout rounds with one game remaining. Attention now turns to a highly anticipated meeting with Norway that is likely to determine who finishes first in the group.For Iraq, the challenge becomes considerably more difficult.
